Stony Brook Grist Mill

Long Island’s most completely equipped working Grist Mill, the Stony Brook Grist Mill is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. As recently as the 1940’s, farmers still brought their wheat and corn to be ground at the mill. In earlier times the mill was the center of community life. People exchanged news and gossip as they waited for the miller to grind their grain. Learners of all ages will get to experience life in the mill hands- on with the Dusty Program, in which they’ll take on the role of “dusties” – assistant millers – and help to husk corn and bag grain under the supervision of a qualified instructor. The Art and Science of Hydraulics program for 7th-12th graders lets them learn about the historical significance of mill power, as well as about the functioning of simple machines, such as pulleys.
