Children’s Museum Lesson Plan
Children’s museums feature interactive exhibits that are designed to be manipulated by children.
The first children’s museum in the world was the Brooklyn Children’s Museum, founded in 1899. Hundreds of children’s museums have opened in the United States since then. As of 2007, the Association of Children’s Museums estimated that there were approximately 80 children’s museums in development alone.

Camp groups may schedule a group visit to the Museum for a day of self-guided play. They can explore a 2-story house, and study carpentry and masonry; the insect room, where they can compare and contrast bugs’ adaptations; and a large outdoor area, with a water and garden play area. They can use their imaginations in Portia’s Playhouse, Block Harbor, and the Sea of Boats; where they can put on costumes, set sail, and try some maritime trades. The Big Games hall offers a way for campers to test their thinking abilities with oversized chess, dominoes, bowling, and other fun games.
