Programs allow students to learn the importance of plant functions as they explore the Arboretum’s gardens. Topics include seeds, adaptations, life cycles, plant anatomy, living and non-living things, and edible plants and nutrition. As they explore the importance of planting, they might get to plant something to keep, create a salad, watch sprouting plants, classify seeds and plant parts, and more. FUN FACTS

The diverse world of plants is perhaps the weirdest, and most fascinating, of all living things. Bamboo can grow over three feet in one day (you can literally watch it grow). There are 600 species of carnivorous plants, which trap and digest insects, frogs, or small birds (if a vegetarian eats this plant, are they still a vegetarian?). The world’s largest flower, Rafflesia, can grow up to three feet in diameter (how big would a bouquet be…). Do a little digging on your next trip to a botanical garden (not literally!), and see what interesting plant facts you can find.

Scouts

Scout programs use the Arboretum to explore local plants and wildlife, gardening, and trees. Activities for Girl Scouts include creating artwork, studying plants, gardening, and learning about recycling and how to care for the planet. Girl Scout Cadets can learn about the science of trees including their life cycle, parts, and the forest life cycle as they work towards the Trees badge. Cub Scouts can learn about different habitats, identify native and non-native plants, learn about birds, and plant seeds or make a small terrarium. Webelos Scouts can learn how to identify the different parts of a tree, and tree families as they work towards the Into the Woods badge.
