Tuckerton Seaport & Baymen’s Museum

Embark on an all-day maritime adventure! Located on 40 acres, the Tuckerton Seaport & Baymen’s Museum is a historical, interactive recreation of life on the Jersey Shore 100 years ago. Groups can see exhibits that focus on South Jersey’s history, pirates, Lenape Indians, local wildlife habitats, the traditional boat carving that is still practiced at Perrine’s Boat Works. and more A reproduction of Tucker’s Island Lighthouse features exhibits on shipwrecks, lighthouse keepers, and more, as well as a 41-step climb up the tower. Students, scouts, homeschoolers, and campers can also see taxidermy, view a working model train, observe live horseshoe crabs, and enjoy a walk on the nature trail.

Lighthouse Lesson Plan

The first known lighthouse was the Pharos of Alexandria, Egypt. Ptolemy I and his son, Ptolemy II, constructed it between 300 and 280 BC. It stood about 450 feet high. This lighthouse was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. It was destroyed in stages by invaders and earthquakes, being destroyed in the 1300s.

There were never more than about 850 lighthouses in operation at once, although about 1,500 were constructed in this country over the years—the hey-day being about 1910.
