Castle in the Clouds

The Lucknow estate, now known as Castle in the Clouds, was the estate of Thomas Gustave Plant who made his fortune in the shoe manufacturing industry, retiring as a millionaire in 1910. Built in 1913-14 high in the Ossipee Mountain Range, the house is an unusual example of Arts and Crafts architecture in New England, expressing the philosophy of living in harmony with nature. The house exhibits skilled hand craftsmanship in every aspect of its interior and exterior, as well as featuring a number of technological innovations of the early 20th century.

Groups receive a short orientation before disembarking for trolley service to Lucknow. Groups can then enjoy a self-guided tour, exploring the mansion — housing everything from vintage clothing to innovative electrical fixtures — and the surrounding grounds. Other points of interest are the gift shop, carriage house and art gallery.
