Newsome House

Visit the Queen Anne style home of Joseph Thomas Newsome, the first African-American attorney in post-Civil War Newport News. Newsome, his wife, and his daughter inhabited the house in the 1900s. On a tour of the Newsome House, groups can view changing art exhibits and a permanent exhibit about Newsome’s life. Educational programs allow groups to interact with a costumed interpreter to learn about the Jim Crow era, civil rights, and more. Groups can also choose to see a presentation on Newsome’s contributions to society, his achievements, and his significance in the history of the community.
