Garden of the Coastal Plain

The Garden of the Coastal Plain is 11-acres of gardens on an early 20th-century farmstead, filled with native and heritage plants for viewing. Programming incorporates roleplaying activities in science and social studies-based activities. Groups can learn in the one-room Oak Grove  schoolhouse, dress as Eleanor Roosevelt or Paul Revere, become a colonist, tax collectors, and more. Science programming includes becoming a botanists, then representing a variety of organisms. Groups may also participate in a recycling relay, and learn about their ecological footprint and how to shrink it. Archaeological digging activities are also available.

Bamboo can grow over three feet in one day (you can literally watch it grow).

There are 600 species of carnivorous plants, which trap and digest insects, frogs, or small birds (if a vegetarian eats this plant, are they still a vegetarian?)

The world’s largest flower, Rafflesia, can grow up to three feet in diameter (have campers figure out how big a bouquet would be).
