Fort C.F. Smith Park

Visit Fort C.F. Smith Park, where science meets history. Fort C.F. Smith was built by the Union army during the Civil War Era to protect the Aqueduct Bridge of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal. The 19-acre site features a 20th century mansion called the Hendry House, Civil war earthwork ruins, a half-mile of trails, a Bird Creek, and an Ornamental Peace Garden. Groups will see the preserved ruins of 22 forts from the Civil War era, which include the bomb proof, 11 of 22 gun emplacements, the fort well, and more. On a walking tour of Fort C.F. Smith Park, groups will see resident and migrating birds, an assortment of plants and flowers, the fort well, the farm shed, and more.
