Fort Ward Museum & Historic Site

Visit one of the Union forts that were built to protect Washington, D.C. from damage during the Civil War. Fort Ward Museum & Historic Site features a variety of exhibits on Civil War history, educational programs, and living history activities. Permanent exhibits at the museum include objects such as muskets, protective vests, equipment used by artillerymen, medical tools used by the Civil War nurses, and more. On a tour of the fort, groups will see several preserved bastions, and the Northwest Bastion’s guns. Living history activities allow groups to understand what daily life was like for a Union soldier in the Civil War.
