Pennsylvania Hospital

Visit Pennsylvania Hospital, the first chartered hospital in the nation, founded 25 years before the start of the American Revolution. Groups will have the chance to tour the hospital’s Historic Library, the nation’s first medical library, which holds over 13,000 rare books, and the Surgical Amphitheater, oldest existing operating theater in North America, which opened in 1804. Groups can also tour the Gallery Pavilion to see Benjamin West’s 19th century painting “Christ Healing the Sick in the Temple” and tour the exterior, including the Physic Garden, which contains medicinal plants that were used in the 18th century.
